Mercor is collaborating with a leading AI lab to contract experienced writers for an AI training data project focused on natural, high-quality written prompts and responses.
You will help models produce writing that sounds more human and better fits the conventions of formats ranging from news explainers and performance reviews to concise Slack messages. All work must be entirely human-written; LLM-generated content is strictly prohibited.
Role Overview
The Experienced Generalist Writer role is a remote contract position paying $45/hr. It suits experienced professionals who want flexible, project-based AI work reviewed on a rolling basis. You collaborate directly with client teams on real deliverables that help train and evaluate next-generation AI systems, with no long-term commitment required.
This role is designed for versatile writers who can shift tone, format, and audience with precision. The work spans communication, essays, explainers, journalism, business writing, academic structures, and product or marketing content.
Key Responsibilities
- Write realistic prompts: Create authentic writing requests that mirror how professionals and everyday users ask for content across communication, essays, concepts, journalism, business, academic, and product or marketing categories.
- Craft polished responses: Produce strong written outputs that demonstrate clarity, structure, accuracy, and audience awareness.
- Adapt voice and format: Match tone to context so a casual Slack note reads differently from a memo, performance review, news explainer, or product requirements document.
- Maintain quality standards: Deliver fully human-written work with careful attention to detail and a consistently high bar for craftsmanship.
Ideal Qualifications
- Professional experience in journalism, education, content marketing, communications, non-fiction writing, or a related field.
- A strong portfolio or track record of published writing, editorial work, curriculum development, or content strategy.
- Range and versatility across formats, audiences, and levels of formality.
- Sharp instincts for tone, structure, and clarity.
- Strong attention to detail and a high personal bar for quality.
More About the Opportunity
- Commitment: Approximately 20 hours per week.
- Language: All writing is in English.
- Schedule: Fully remote and completed on your own schedule.
- Status: Independent contractor engagement through Mercor.
