What the work actually involves
Taken from the live listings themselves:
- Evaluate the quality and correctness of AI-assisted software-development traces used to train and evaluate a frontier AI lab's models.
- You'll assess end-to-end coding sessions produced with AI-assisted developer tools , judging correctness, workflow soundness, and reasoning , and provide clear, rubric-based written feedback.
- About Mercor’s talent network Join our Backend Engineer Expert Network to connect with leading AI labs and companies seeking your expertise.
- This is an open application for future contract opportunities that match your background and interests.
Typical responsibilities
Pulled from the live listings in this category:
- Render a reference page and two candidate replications at 1920×1080 and judge which is the closer reproduction, state by state.
- Diff visual fidelity in detail: box model and spacing, typography (family, size, weight, line-height, letter-spacing), color and border treatment, image and asset handling, z-order and overflow.
- Test responsiveness: a nav bar that looks right at 1920px but collapses at 1400px is a defect, and you should be able to say precisely why.
- Build and ship end-to-end web applications spanning frontend, backend services, and APIs.
- Integrate LLM inference endpoints using REST/gRPC, streaming responses, SSE, or WebSockets.
- Develop scalable backend services using GCP services such as Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, Firestore/Cloud SQL, and GCS.
What employers ask for
- Strong software development experience with Python and Node.js/TypeScript.
- Hands-on frontend development experience with React, Next.js, or similar modern frameworks.
- Strong understanding of API design, including REST APIs, streaming/SSE, WebSockets, and/or gRPC.
- Experience integrating LLM APIs or model inference endpoints into production applications.
- Experience with Docker, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and relational/NoSQL databases.
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience (internships excluded)
How the pay is spread
Half of the listings with a published rate fall between $65 and $100 an hour. The bottom of the range is $25 and the top is $150. Rate depends far more on credentials and specialism than on which platform you use.
Which platform to start with
Turing currently lists the most roles in this category (33 of 67). Platforms differ mainly in eligibility and how they screen, not in the kind of work. See which platforms hire in your country before you spend time on applications.
How to apply
Applications are completed on the hiring platform, not on this site. Most of these platforms screen with a short qualification step before routing you to paid work, so a complete profile matters more than a long cover letter. Applying is free and none of these platforms charge a fee to start.
