Software Developer (Active Github Contributor)

Mercor is partnering with a leading AI lab to find experienced open-source contributors who can diagnose, fix, and validate issues inside major repositories while working independently on a flexible schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze and resolve software issues drawn from large open-source codebases, reproducing complex bugs and edge cases.
• Write, test, and validate code solutions that address bugs and system inefficiencies for production AI workflows.
• Implement and refine APIs, database structures, and backend components that support next-generation machine learning systems.
• Configure and document local development environments to replicate issues and deliver reliable fixes.

Ideal Qualifications

• 1+ years of professional software engineering experience in a fast-paced or technically demanding environment.
• Proven contribution history to repositories such as astropy/astropy, django/django, matplotlib/matplotlib, pytest-dev/pytest, scikit-learn/scikit-learn, sphinx-doc/sphinx, or sympy/sympy.
• Advanced proficiency in Python, API development, and structured testing practices.
• Excellent analytical, written, and communication skills with a focus on clear documentation.
• Exceptional attention to detail and persistence when debugging complex systems.
• Residency in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

More About the Opportunity

• Fully remote and asynchronous - complete work on your own schedule.
• Expected workload of 10-20 hours per week with flexibility to scale up to 40 hours.
• Open-ended engagement with potential for long-term collaboration.
• Project start date is mid to late October with applications reviewed on a rolling basis.

Compensation & Contract Terms

• Independent contractor engagement through Mercor with hourly compensation of $80-$110 per hour.
• Payments issued weekly via Stripe Connect based on services rendered.
• Contractors maintain full control over their work schedule, tools, and delivery methods.
